Bear activity is on the rise. With climate change playing a huge factor on these furry guys hibernation schedules. We tend to see bears more year round in Truckee and Lake Tahoe, CA. This week a beloved bear by the name of Jasper was shot and killed accidentally by an officer. Deputy’s in these incidents will usually use rubber bullets to discourage the bears, but the officer involved did not patrol the lake regularly. It was a sad day for many locals who were use to seeing Jasper, and her 2 cute cubs.
“Jasper–as Incline Village residents called her–was well-known in Incline neighborhoods. That familiarity led to a book about her, “A Bear’s Tale,”. but it also indicated she frequented these streets looking for an easy meal, usually from unsecured trash. That behavior often leads to problem and puts the animal at risk.
Every year it means intervention by authorities, which can include a rubber bullet to discourage this potentially dangerous behavior.” – Ed Pearce with Kolo 8 News
This is good reminder for residents, visitors and second homeowners that we need to “Be Bear Aware”. The purchase and properly use of a bear-proof garbage container is viable. For information about your bear-proof garbage container, please contact Carmen Carr you local real estate agent.
